Genealogy

Genealogy Services

The Minot Public Library offers a variety of genealogy services, including access to the Library Edition of Ancestry (to be used within the library only) and Heritage Quest. Ancestry, Library Edition provides access to more than 1.2 billion names, more than 3,000 databases, primary source documents, images and a variety of genealogical research features. Heritage Quest is a comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources -- rich in unique primary sources, local and family histories and finding aids.

MPL also has hundreds of valuable print resources on topics from beginning your genealogy research to specific cemetery and passenger lists. In addition to these, our library has the following local newspapers on microfilm. Finally, there are many online resources available for researchers and MPL has compiled some of the best links here.

If you reside outside our service area and want some genealogical assistance our librarians will research your requests for the following fees:

Great Plains Room

Great Plains Room 

The Great Plains Room of the Minot Public Library contains items related to the local history of Minot, Ward County and North Dakota. Included in this collection are: rare items, older government documents, telephone directories, school yearbooks, Centennial publications, scrapbooks from class reunions and much more. Items from the Great Plains collection are not available to be checked out, but copies can be made of portions of publications.

Whenever possible the Library obtains and retains a copy of all printed materials which contributes to a knowledge of Minot, Ward County and Region II, past and present for the Great Plains Collection. Duplications of some items are available for circulation. Local studies made by Minot State University and publications of local agencies comprise a part of the Library's holdings. We have a special interest in acquiring publications by local, state and regional authors. MPL will be a repository for. The Great Plains Room is available to everyone when the library is open.
