Services

Get a library Card

Library cards are available to anyone with a permanent or student address in Minot or the seven county region surrounding Minot. Persons applying for a card must provide a picture ID card with current address (or a picture ID card and a separate proof of address), contact information for a reference person, and complete an application. A child must be 4 years old to obtain their own library card.

 Acceptable forms of photo identification include:

  • Any state or federal issued ID 
  • Driver’s license from ND or another state
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • School ID

Acceptable proof of address include, but are not limited to: 

  • Unexpired lease agreement 
  • Valid vehicle registration 
  • Paystubs
  • State licenses, such as hunting and fishing licenses
  • Unexpired PO Box rental receipt 
  • Any official mail received in the individual’s name at an address in the service area within the last 60 days (such as utility bills or property tax statement)

The reference person provided must not live at the same address as the applicant, unless the applicant is under the age of 18. 

A person receiving a Minot Public Library card is agreeing that he/she is responsible for the use of the library card and to adhere to all library policies. First-time users are able to check out a maximum of three (3) items. Once these items have been returned the usual check out limits apply.

*A $2.00 charge is assessed for replacement of a lost card.

Alternative Library Cards

MPL offers different alternative cards for patrons who cannot meet the requirements for getting a library card. This includes a $25 non-resident card, $10 temporary card, and $10 internet-only card. Each of these cards have their own limitations and necessary documents required for obtaining a card. For more information on alternative library cards please call (701) 852-1045. 

Digital Only Library Cards

You can now get a Digital Only Library Card! If you cannot come into the Library but want to use our online resources you can still get a library card. Digital Only Library Card holders must reside in our service area. Those who fill out a Digital Only Library Card form will be contacted within one to two business days to receive their library card. Digital Only Library Cards are good for one (1) year. Cardholders can come to the Library any time with their ID to receive a physical library card.

Technology Tutors

If you have a Minot Public Library card, you can receive FREE technology assistance at the Minot Public Library. If you do not already have a Minot Public Library card, please see the information on how to get a library card under the “Services” tab. Each of these one-on-one tutoring sessions will be with a Library staff member. These free tutoring sessions will last approximately 45 minutes.

Topics covered can include:

  • Microsoft Suite Basics: Learn about Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Publisher
  • Basic Internet & Searching Tips: Learn about internet options, favorites, page setup, printing, history, text size and general searching
  • Basic E-Mail: Set up a free e-mail account online and learn how to compose and send e-mails, or general help with the ins and outs of email
  • Computer Basics: Learn the very basics of computer use, including how to use the mouse and how to navigate your desktop
  • eBooks, eAudiobooks & eVideos: Learn about downloadable electronic media formats using MPL resources
  • Genealogy Resource Links: Learn about quality genealogy internet sites, including web resources and using Ancestry Plus here at Minot Public Library
  • Basic 3D Printing design: Learn about how 3D printers work, and how to make your own design to be 3D printed

     

With Tech Tutors, YOU get to choose the topic you want to learn about and you’ll receive individualized training at your own pace. If you don’t see a topic you’re interested in, contact us to find out if we can help. You are encouraged to bring your own device for use during training (laptops, tablets, phones, Nooks, iPads, Kindles, etc.).
