Altru’s Inpatient Behavioral Health Center has 24 beds with 2 distinct units to serve adolescent and adult patients. There are 6 beds on the adolescent unit serving ages 13-17 years old; however, we may accept 12 year olds on a case-by-case basis. There are 18 beds on our adult unit serving ages 18+.
Our treatment team consists of 2 psychiatrists, 2 psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, Director of Clinical Services, social worker, RNs/LPNs, behavioral health techs, activity therapist, and teacher through the Grand Forks Public Schools for adolescent patients.
Our unit provides a safe, structured environment with therapeutic care. The primary modes of treatment are intense, structured therapeutic programming to fit the needs of the milieu and medication management. Our goal is to stabilize the patient to return to the community and follow-up with outpatient programs or transition to a step-down program.
Our patients have a daily schedule of groups to attend to work on processing why they are here as well as coping skills and strengths. There are scheduled phone and visiting times to avoid interrupting groups. Our interdisciplinary team meets daily to determine treatment needs and discharge plans. Our nurses and techs perform 15-minute safety checks on all patients.
Altru’s Inpatient Behavioral Health Center has a lot of exciting plans for the future! In 2026, our intake department will open and allow for direct admissions from regional partners and for patients to walk-in to our facility to be assessed and admitted. This will eliminate the need for a visit to the emergency department if appropriate. Our plans for expansion will be completed in November 2026, including the addition of 24 beds.
At this time, all patients must be referred through an emergency department. For local patients, they can go directly to Altru’s emergency department to be assessed. For regional patients, the regional emergency department will call our intake department at 701.780.3440 (option 2) to start the referral process. Required documentation will need to be faxed to our facility to be reviewed by our intake department/charge nurse and psychiatrist.
